C4C- Congregations 4 Children

Memorial United Methodist Church holds a vision of connecting every child and their family to the love and hope of Jesus Christ. Community outreach efforts of the church are filtered through this vision and are grounded in the strong relationship with the local school, Fred L. Wilson Elementary.

Providing for the basic needs for the students, having a volunteer presence at the school and supporting the school staff have built the foundation of an ever growing relationship with Fred L. Wilson Elementary (FLW).

Through various ministries, Memorial UMC serves to meet basic needs for the kids attending Fred L. Wilson Elementary, to promote literacy, to support the teachers and staff, and encourage parent and community involvement with the school. Opportunities to serve using your gifts and talents are available. The Congregations for Children (C4C) team coordinates the following ministry opportunities.

LITERACY

READING BUDDIES:

Freddy’s Friends promote literacy by spending time with children needing support to improve their reading and comprehension skills. Participants commit to 30 minutes to 1 hour each serving as a Reading Buddy for a chosen child or small group of children at Fred L. Wilson Elementary. Some reading buddies meet with children at the school throughout the summer.

New and gently used books are collected to donate to children at Fred L. Wilson who might otherwise have limited opportunities to own their own books.

BASIC NEEDS

The Back to School Blast is celebrated in August preparing Fred L. Wilson families for the start of school. Back packs and grade specific school supplies are shared with Fred L. Wilson families chosen by the school. Lunch is served while we distribute supplies and play games.

Sweatshirts are collected by the church annually to donate to the Fred L. Wilson Elementary clothing closet. Each sweatshirt is tagged with a “Love Note” as a way to encourage the recipient. These sweatshirts are distributed to students who may need an extra layer of warmth.

Uniforms and other clothing items are given to the school to replenish the clothing closet as needs arise throughout the year.

The Angel Tree Christmas Party is a celebration held in December at Fred L. Wilson Elementary. Families selected by the school are hosted for lunch and activities Christmas gifts are purchased for the children via the church Angel Tree. Church participants partner with the parents to wrap their children’s gifts after lunch.

Weekend Food Bags are provided twice monthly to children selected by Fred L. Wilson. Food Bags are delivered to the students to carry home for the weekend to assist with food insecurity. Memorial UMC partners with West Point Baptist to provide Weekend Food Bags for 24 families.

Each child at Fred L. Wilson is celebrated on their birthday with a birthday wish lanyard and a free snack at lunch provided by the church.

TEACHER SUPPORT

Each May, Memorial UMC celebrates the dedication of teachers and staff during Teachers’ Appreciation Week. This year’s celebration included a Monday morning Waffle Bar prepared and served by church participants.

Memorial UMC loves and supports the teachers and staff with small gifts, Welcome Back snack trays, Birthday gifts, and most recently with our Adopt a Teacher ministry.

Memorial UMC participants cover lunch duty for the teachers at Fred L. Wilson once each month during the academic year. Lunch duty begins at 11:00 am and ends at 1:00 pm.
